On The Sofa With Rebecca Hughes

Rebecca Hughes Interiors is a London-based, luxury design studio that provides bespoke services from project conception to completion, crafting personalised spaces that reflect the unique preferences, lifestyle, and requirements of its discerning clientele.

Rebecca Hughes Interiors has recently completed high-profile design commissions throughout the UK, Central Europe, India, and Malaysia. The team is committed to understanding each distinct brief, with an aim to deliver a collaborative and holistic end-to-end design experience - resulting in sympathetic, inspiring interiors.

    1. Hi Rebecca, tell us a bit about your journey into interior design.
After graduating from university, I was working in advertising but felt dissatisfied. I longed to be involved in a more creative career, so I started to dream about pivoting. As a child, I would often rearrange my room and began to realise just how important my surroundings are to me. Interior design felt like a natural progression of that. I love receiving a brief, really getting to know a client, understanding a building and its limitations as well as its potential, and then starting to dream.
    2. You have chosen to work with George Smith on several beautiful projects, what is it about our designs that resonates with your vision and keeps you coming back?
As a studio, we’ve incorporated George Smith pieces into numerous projects over the years. The craftsmanship is exceptional, but what really sets each piece apart is the unparalleled level of comfort and plushness – something our clients absolutely love.

Rebecca

I particularly admire George Smith’s commitment to heritage and craftsmanship. Every piece is made to stand the test of time, both in terms of quality and design. I’m a firm believer that good design should have longevity - buy once, buy well - and George Smith embodies that philosophy beautifully.

    3. If you could design your dream George Smith piece for your home, what would that look like and where would it sit?
I need a sofa that is deep enough to curl up with my three boys, watch a film and yet when we move and leave it returns back to its perfect position full of plumpiness and smart durable fabric. Strong lines yet soft curves and low arms, I also love a skirt much better than having exposed legs.

    4. Are you a curl-up, sprawl-out or perch-on-the-edge sofa sitter?
My favourite thing is to host and so often when we have dinner parties, I will perch, making sure everyone has enough drinks and food etc, but when I am snuggling with my boys, I’m definitely a curl up and snuggle up mum. Never a sprawl-out…I leave that to my husband!

    5. What trends or innovations do you foresee shaping the future of interior design and how will you evolve to stay at the forefront of this?
Carefully considered choices: Reclaiming and repurposing where possible, reusing what already exists, and investing in pieces built to last – will always have relevance. Looking ahead, I believe the value of skilled artisans and exceptional craftsmanship will only continue to grow.

Layered, collected interiors: Homes that evolve over time and reflect the people who live in them, bringing together antiques, vintage finds and contemporary design. This mix creates interiors that feel authentic, personal, and timeless.

Bespoke craftsmanship: Prioritising custom joinery, upholstery, and one-off pieces brings a sense of individuality and character to a space, creating interiors that feel truly considered and unique.

    6. Lastly, any exciting projects in the pipeline where we might see more George Smith furniture?
Yes, we have several exciting projects in the pipeline, both in London and the countryside, as well as internationally, including a number of projects in the Middle East. It’s an incredibly exciting time for the studio, and George Smith furniture will, of course, continue to play a role in many of our upcoming projects.
